Youth and Science. “Orchestrating” information streams

On 28 October 2011 the second joint JINR-CERN-MEPhI School “Grid and modern information systems” (with the participation of the “Skolkovo” Foundation) finishes its 5-day work. Students from MEPhI, MIPT, MSU, MEPI, St.Petersburg Polytechnic University, Nizhni Novgorod State University, the University “Dubna”, the JINR UC, universities in Bulgaria, Georgia, Poland and Ukraine attended the School and boosted up their knowledge in science. The lecturers of the School are specialists in information technology from CERN, JINR and other centres.

Chairman of the School Organizing Committee N.Russakovich informed the participants at the opening ceremony about the seven-year programme of the JINR development. MEPhI president B.Onykij stressed in his speech the necessity to develop cooperation of universities with JINR and CERN to train high-quality staff for modern information technology.



Vice-Director of LIT JINR V.Korenkov arrived at the School immediately after his business trip to CERN. He said:
“The committee on JINR-CERN cooperation took very important decisions at its recent meeting. First, an agreement will be signed in the nearest future on the associate membership of the Russian Federation to CERN. Second, a centre for the processing of data from the LHC level Tier1 will be organized in Russia on the basis of JINR and SRC “Kurchatov Institute”.

Staff member of the international ties department of CERN responsible for cooperation with Russia and other countries non-members T.Kurtyka gave a lecture “CERN Scientific Programme: Today and Tomorrow”. He informed the student about four tasks at CERN – fundamental research in particle physics; development of new technologies for physics and application in every-day life; training youth in science and technological engineering; bringing nations together through science.

The participants of the School visited the Informational Computing Complex of LIT and Dubna places of interest.
