The JINR Science & Technology Library (STL) provides library, bibliographic, and information services to JINR employees. The STL was founded in 1949 on the basis of the library of the Hydrotechnical Laboratory (HTL) of the USSR Academy of Sciences. To date, the Library’s collection comprises approximately 434 000 items, including literature in Russian and other languages on physics, mathematics, astrophysics, chemistry, biology, theoretical aspects of engineering sciences, information technologies, and the methodological issues of science in general. Publications in other languages account for 43 % of the materials. The collection includes monographs, brochures, anthologies, conference proceedings, textbooks and teaching aids, reference books, encyclopaedias, periodicals, preprints, dissertations, and dissertation abstracts. JINR users have access to a substantial number of full-text Russian and international electronic resources. Readers can request literature not available in the library via the Interlibrary Loan System from the Russian State Library, the State Public Scientific & Technological Library, the All-Russian Institute for Scientific and Technical Information, and the Central Library System of the Branch of Engineering Sciences of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
STL online catalogues and information technologies
The STL utilises the Absotheque automated information and library system used for creating electronic catalogues and databases. The OPAC software module provides access to online catalogues. The link system allows viewing not only bibliographic records but, in many cases, the full texts. There is an electronic system for managing literature borrowing and return. Readers can order publications from the library collections through their personal account and view their library cards from their desks without visiting the library. The Science & Technology Library creates its own full-text electronic resources (by scanning and posting preprints, abstracts, deposited publications, collections, monographs, and conference proceedings published at the Institute in the electronic catalogue). Reading rooms equipped with computers, scanners, and printers are available to the JINR employees and guests.
Key activities:

- inputting reference and bibliographic information into electronic catalogues;
- compiling informational bulletins about new acquisitions, holding exhibitions of new acquisitions, and thematic exhibitions for significant dates and anniversaries of scientists;
- maintaining the database of articles by JINR employees and compiling the annual Index of JINR Scientific Papers. All Indexes since 1956 are available in online on the STL website;
- making bibliographic references;
- scanning publications.
