AYSS seminar in JINR Scientists’ Club

Seminars

On 9 February 2023, at 4:00 PM, the Association of Young Scientists and Specialists of JINR invites you to the next seminar that will take place in the hall of the JINR Scientists’ Club (6, Joliot-Curie street, left side).

Alexander Madumarov (Head of the FLNR group) will deliver a report “Methods for studying the chemical properties of superheavy elements (SHE)”.

Alexander speaks about the seminar, “The discovery of new SHE elements in fusion reactions with the doubly magical 48Ca core at heavy-ion accelerators in the Flerov Laboratory of Nuclear Reactions allowed us to approach the island of stability and fill in all the missing cells of the 7th period of the Mendeleev’s Periodic Table up to Og (Z = 118). The study of the chemical properties of the obtained radionuclides serves as an additional independent confirmation of the synthesis of a new element. Due to the extremely short half-life of elements heavier than Sg, the adsorption of volatile compounds of the corresponding element on various surfaces is studied in the methods of express thermochromatography and gas phase isothermal chromatography. These approaches make it possible to study the chemical properties of transactinides, which are synthesised at accelerators and are available only as single atoms with lifetimes of seconds or fractions of a second. In addition, I will speak about the first chemical experiment at the advanced accelerator complex of the SHE Factory to study the adsorption properties of 287Fl (Z=114) and 283Cn (Z=112) using thermochromatography”.

There will be a small coffee break at 4:00 PM, which precedes the seminar. The report will start at 4:15 PM.

If you are going to join the event of 9 February, please take part in the survey via the link not later than 4:00 PM 8 February.
