Krasavin seminar on radiation biology
Date and Time: Tuesday, 2 December 2025, at 3:30 PM
Venue: Conference Hall (bld. 113, 4th floor), Laboratory of Radiation Biology
Seminar topic: “The Division of Radiation Biophysics at the Separated Sector Cyclotron Laboratory of iThemba LABS”
Speaker: Randall Fisher (NRF iThemba LABS, South Africa)
The Radiation Biophysics Division is a subsection of the Separated Sector Cyclotron (SSC) Laboratory at the South African National Research Foundation’s (NRF’s) iThemba Laboratory for Accelerator-Based Sciences (LABS). The Division was born from iThemba’s 200 MeV clinical Proton and Fast Neutron therapy centre established in the 1980’s and now consists of a Radiobiology and a Medical Physics subsection. Using the National Research Infrastructure Particle Accelerator platform, the Radiation Biophysics team has undertaken a range of novel and interesting research projects in preclinical cancer, spaceflight radiobiology, indigenous medicine, theranostics, and the evolutionary mechanisms of cancer-resistance. The seminar presents an overview of the Division, past and present projects and highlights key research infrastructure available to external facility users undertaking radiobiology experiments at iThemba.
