AYSS seminar at JINR Scientists’ Club

Seminars

On 4 February 2026, at 4:00 PM, the Association of Young Scientists and Specialists at JINR invites everyone interested to the next seminar that will take place in the Big Hall of the JINR Scientists’ Club (6 Joliot-Curie St, left side).

Institute’s Deputy Chief Scientific Secretary Alexey Zhemchugov will deliver a presentation titled “CERN and JINR: almost twins?”.

In the mid-1950s, two international organizations dedicated to peaceful research in nuclear and particle physics were established: CERN in Geneva, Switzerland, and, somewhat later, JINR in Dubna, USSR. Over the course of their more than half-century-long history, they have employed several generations of scientists, created and developed a major research infrastructure, made discoveries, and survived significant political changes in the world. However, despite historical and functional similarities, these organizations are not exactly twins. This talk attempts to summarise key events in the histories, competition, and collaboration of CERN and JINR to compare the two institutions.
