AYSS seminar at JINR Scientists’ Club

On 8 April 2026, at 4:00 PM, the Association of Young Scientists and Specialists at JINR invites everyone interested to the next seminar that will take place in the Big Hall of the JINR Scientists’ Club (6 Joliot-Curie St, left side).

A DLNP junior researcher Kirill Tarasov will deliver the presentation titled “How bioinformatics helps us study uncultivated microorganisms: analysing the Baksan Neutrino Observatory microbial community”.

Until recently, the tremendous diversity of microorganisms has escaped scientists’ notice. The key reason is that more than 99 % of microorganisms could not be isolated in pure culture and, therefore, could not be studied using classic microbiology techniques requiring pure culture. The speaker will provide a brief overview of the breakthroughs in the methods of molecular biology and bioinformatics that allowed studying the genomes of uncultivated microorganisms. The talk will focus on a recent study of the microbial community of the Baksan Neutrino Observatory using modern methods that do not require pure culture.
