AYSS seminar at JINR Scientists’ Club

Seminars

On 11 February 2026, at 4:00 PM, the Association of Young Scientists and Specialists at JINR invites everyone interested to the next seminar that will take place in the Big Hall of the JINR Scientists’ Club (6 Joliot-Curie St, left side).

A DLNP Sector Head Semion Gurskiy will deliver a presentation titled “From theory to practice: how protons are accelerated to fight cancer”.

Hadron therapy is the cutting edge of radiation oncology, offering hope to thousands of patients (up to 50 000 annually in Russia). But how does the technology that makes this possible work?

The speaker will give a “technical” tour inside a cyclotron, the most common accelerator for proton therapy: the seminar will focus on reviewing its design and one of its key systems – the high-frequency system. This is the “power plant” that makes the proton energy sufficient to precisely target the tumour.
