AYSS seminar at JINR Scientists’ Club

Seminars

On 13 September, at 4:00 PM, the Association of Young Scientists and Specialists of JINR invites everyone interested to the next seminar that will take place in the Big Hall of the JINR Scientists’ Club (6, Joliot-Curie street, left side).

Maria Pilipenko, Director of the JINR Universal Public Library, will make a report “Third place. How Blokhinka competes with bar, sofa, and embankment for your free time”.

Maria Pilipenko speaks about the seminar, “Libraries of the country started to dust their bookshelves and break the silence there more than ten years ago. What are they like now? It largely depends on the location. For citizens of big cities, libraries actually became the third place a long time ago. As for libraries in small cities, they come to life at school library lessons and evening amateur events. By the way, what is the “third place” as a concept of urbanism? Can the Dubna library claim to be such a place? Experience suggests that not very much. However, we refuse to put up with the role of a book depository and a shelter for disparate events. We would like not to store book, but show them to the world, bring reading back to life as one of the most important habits of an educated person. In the light of this desire, we try to organize our events. It seems that is why they often turn out to be meaningful and interesting. Moreover, the library also has a unique advantage, such as openness. Anybody can attend our events and join our communities for free. It remains only to inform urbi et orbi about what is happening in the library and try to compete for customers with our main competitors, such as a sofa (with a cat), a bar, and a promenade. I will talk about it in my speech.”

There will be a small coffee break at 4:00 PM, which precedes the seminar. The report will start at 4:15 PM.
