In September 2026, the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research and the Institute of Modern Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (IMP CAS) signed an Addendum to the Memorandum of Understanding. The document provides for joint prompt fission neutron measurements and the development of high-precision specialised detector systems.

During the new stage of cooperation, the parties will focus on two complementary scientific areas. At the Flerov Laboratory of Nuclear Reactions, plans include joint studies on the emission of prompt neutrons during the spontaneous fission of heavy and superheavy nuclei produced in heavy-ion reactions. The experiments will be carried out using the highly efficient SFiNx Detector System with the participation of IMP CAS specialists.

The second area is related to the development of specialised detector systems and methods for studying induced fission at the facilities of the Institute of Modern Physics. The Chinese side will provide the infrastructure and neutron beams, while JINR specialists will participate in developing new detector concepts, preparing and conducting experiments, as well as analysing and interpreting the obtained data. In addition, the parties will work on theoretical descriptions of the results.

In the near future, a comprehensive plan of joint activities will be formulated. It will cover the entire spectrum of upcoming work: from computer-aided design, assembly and testing of detectors to the theoretical modelling and comprehensive analysis of the experimental data obtained.
