On 8 December 2025, a general meeting of the Physics Division of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS) took place, preceding the general meeting of RAS members on 9 December. JINR Scientific Leader, RAS Academician Victor Anatolievich Matveev gave a talk on the achievements of Soviet and Russian scientists in particle physics in 1980s and 1990s, along with international scientific and technical cooperation at the scientific session of the RAS Physics Division meeting.

The JINR Scientific Leader discussed his presentation at the 4th International Symposium on the History of Particle Physics, held at CERN on 10–13 November 2025. The symposium was dedicated to significant particle physics discoveries in the 1980s and 1990s, featuring talks by two Russian scientists, academicians Alexander Nikolaevich Skrinsky (RAS Institute for Nuclear Research) and Victor Anatolievich Matveev (JINR).

At the end, the speaker noted that Soviet Union and Russia‘s contribution greatly contributed to the study of particle physics, and despite today’s objective difficulties, the prestige of fundamental research is very high, with new nuclear physics perspectives open in Russia. “Speaking from my experience working at the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research and as part of the CERN collaborations, international scientific cooperation is among the highest values of modern society and deserves to be discussed: it is not aside from politics, but above it. This opinion was highlighted by reputable scientists participating in the symposium, unconditionally respected from the world community. The mission of our Institute – promoting international cooperation – is very important both for the development of science and for social progress,” Victor Matveev summarised.
