JINR at international conferences in Saint Petersburg and Tomsk
News, 13 October 2025
In September 2025, employees of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research participated in two international scientific conferences. Representatives of the FLAP Collaboration from the Laboratory of Nuclear Problems and the Laboratory of High Energy Physics made presentations on JINR’s research infrastructure and results of the latest studies.
The 29th Russian Particle Accelerators international conference (RuPAC’25) organized by the Efremov Institute of Electrophysical Apparatus of the Rosatom State Corporation took place in Saint Petersburg from 15 to 19 September 2025. The event dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the nuclear industry brought together a record number of participants: 364 scientists, engineers, and specialists from Russia, China, Belarus, and other countries.
The biennial conference is a key platform for the exchange of information and discussion of issues of accelerator science and technology, charged particle beam physics, as well as the development and modernisation of accelerator facilities. Special attention is paid to involviong young researchers in addressing today’s issues of the accelerator industry.
The RuPAC’25 programme covers a wide range of cutting-edge scientific fields:
- modern trends in accelerator technologies;
- colliders;
- beam dynamics and new approaches to particle acceleration;
- high intensity accelerators;
- heavy ion accelerators;
- synchrotron radiation and free electron laser facilities;
- the main systems of accelerators and accelerator complexes (accelerating, vacuum, automated control systems, beam diagnostics, etc.);
- superconducting technologies in accelerators;
- microwave accelerators and devices for their power supply;
- ion, electron, and positron sources;
- applications of accelerators.
The opening ceremony was attended by R&D Director of the Rosatom State Corporation Viktor Ilgisonis; Deputy Director for Megascience Projects at the Kurchatov Institute, a member of the Presidential Council for Science and Education Nikita Marchenkov; Chair of the Scientific Council of the Physics Division of the Russian Academy of Sciences on Charged Particle Accelerators, a member of the International Committee for Future Accelerators Sergey Ivanov; JINR Chief Engineer Boris Gikal; First Deputy Chair of the Saint Petersburg Committee for Science and Higher Education Irina Ganus; and Director General of the Efremov Institute Sergey Herzog.
At a plenary session, Sector Head at the Laboratory of Nuclear Problems at JINR Mikhail Nozdrin discussed the progress and development prospects of the project of the LINAC-200 Linear Electron Accelerator.
A research intern at the Laboratory of High Energy Physics at JINR, a graduate student of Tomsk Polytechnic University (TPU) Elizaveta Bushmina made a poster presentation “Generation of coherent radiation during the interaction of a microtron beam with dielectric targets”. This topic includes a promising method for non-destructive diagnostics of transverse and longitudinal characteristics of an electron beam. The study was carried out as part of the FLAP Collaboration’s work at the MT-25 Microtron.
The eventful scientific programme of the RuPAC’25 conference highlighted the importance of progressing from the design to the implementation of large-scale projects and emphasised the sustainable development of the international scientific and technological ecosystem – from fundamental studies to applied industrial solutions.
“Physical and technical problems in science, industry and medicine” international conference
Tomsk Polytechnic University hosted the International scientific and practical conference entitled ” Physical and technical problems in science, industry and medicine”, dedicated to the 75th anniversary of the founding of the TPU Faculty of Physics and Technology. The event is a major platform for the exchange of experience between representatives of science, industry, and medicine, bringing together experts from the world’s leading scientific centres and enterprises.
The conference programme was divided into three key sections:
- “Innovative technologies and materials in the energy industry”;
- “Digitalisation of processes and production”;
- “Nuclear facilities: design, operation, safety, and decommissioning”.
A senior engineer at the Laboratory of High Energy Physics at JINR Dmitry Korovkin took part in the “Digitalisation of processes and production” section. His talk was devoted to the application of modern digitalisation methods based on the ORICYCLE Automated System for Monitoring and Controlling Scientific and Technical Equipment in nuclear physics and work with relativistic particle beams.
The international FLAP Collaboration brings together about 70 researchers from JINR (Dubna), Belgorod National Research University, Tomsk Polytechnic University, Petersburg Nuclear Physics Institute, Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University, John Adams Institute at the University of London, and scientific centres in Chile, Japan, and Armenia. Most of the participants are young researchers. The international FLAP Collaboration was created to conduct applied and fundamental research at JINR’s unique facility, the LINAC-200 Linear Electron Accelerator. FLAP Collaboration members gave over 50 presentations at both conferences.
