“To Live” (1994): In the 1940s, Xu Fugui, a rich man’s son and compulsive gambler, loses his family property to a man named Long’er. His father dies after signing over the family house to Long’er, and wife Jiazhen, leaves him, along with their daughter, Fengxia, and their unborn son, Youqing. Long’er does, however, give Fugui a set of shadow puppets. He starts a shadow puppet troupe with a partner named Chunsheng.
