On 12 and 13 December, the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research participated in events in Tashkent commemorating the 80th anniversary of the founding of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Uzbekistan (AS RUz). Additionally, JINR representatives took part in the “Science as Foundation of New Uzbekistan” international conference, visited an innovation exhibition and an exhibition dedicated to the history of AS RUz.

The head of the delegation, JINR Vice-Director Latchesar Kostov, congratulated the Academy on behalf of the multinational JINR team, noting that science and arts have flourished in Uzbekistan ever since Middle Ages. “Today, researchers from Uzbekistan continue to actively participate in implementing JINR scientific programme and make a significant contribution to the Institute’s world-class scientific achievements. We are proud to have Uzbekistan as a Member State of our international intergovernmental organization and greatly appreciate the Republic’s collaboration with JINR. Uzbekistan is one of our strategic partners. The Uzbekistan Academy of Sciences has every right to take pride in its contribution to global science. As we celebrate this anniversary, we are not only reflecting on the Academy’s glorious history, but also working out ambitious plans for the future together,” he emphasised.

Among the outstanding recent cooperation achievements, Latchesar Kostov highlighted the launch of a unique highly sensitive analytical neutronographic facility and a cloud computing cluster that integrates the computing resources of the Institute of Nuclear Physics of the AS RUz into the JINR cloud service. In addition, there are high hopes for training qualified personnel from Uzbekistan. Thus, this year, the parties signed an agreement on Master’s educational programmes. They are to be implemented at Dubna State University by JINR laboratories together with the leading universities of Uzbekistan: National University, Tashkent State Technical University, and Samarkand State University.

Latchesar Kostov noted that for 67 years of cooperation, more than 200 scientists and specialists from Uzbekistan had gained experience at JINR, and over 40 Doctors of Science and 100 Candidates of Science had joined the scientific community of Uzbekistan. Moreover, five JINR employees have been appointed as Academicians of the Academy of Sciences of Uzbekistan and supervised leading research and educational institutions of the Republic.

The Academy of Sciences of Uzbekistan was founded on 4 November 1943.
