JINR shared experience of international cooperation at seminar in Brazil

On 5 December 2025, Brasília hosted a high-level international seminar dedicated to the prospecst of advancing scientific partnerships in physics in Latin America. The event was organized by the Latin American Centre for Physics (CLAF) and the Brazilian Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MCTI). In addition to the participants from Latin America, among attendees were representatives of UNESCO, CERN, and JINR.

Deputy Director of the Frank Laboratory of Neutron Physics Norbert Kucerka presented the activities of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research to representatives of the region’s scientific community. He discussed JINR’s experience as an intergovernmental organization for multidisciplinary studies as part of international scientific cooperation.

The participants paid special attention to issues related to organizing academic exchange between JINR and Latin American countries. Norbert Kucerka spoke about JINR’s scholarship and postdoctoral programmes, along with the International School on Nuclear Methods and Applied Research in Environmental, Material and Life Sciences (NUMAR-2026), which Brazil is set to host in 2026.

The seminar was attended by Ambassadors of the Federative Republic of Brazil, the Republic of Chile, the Republic of Costa Rica, the United Mexican States, and the Argentine Republic, high-ranking representatives of the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development of Brazil (CNPq), and delegates from scientific centres of the region and international organizations.

Background information

The Latin American Centre for Physics (CLAF) is an international intergovernmental organization founded on 26 March 1962 under the auspices of the Brazilian Government and UNESCO to promote physics in the region. CLAF consists of 20 countries. Since 2025, the organization is headed by Dr. Ulisses Barres de Almeida. Three CLAF members – Cuba, Brazil and Mexico – are among the JINR Member and Partner States.
