A visit of Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of Turkey to the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research

Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Turkey in Moscow Ümit Yardım, and First secretary of the Embassy Cevdet Yılmaz visited the Joint institute for Nuclear Research in Dubna on 7 August 2015.

The delegation was met by JINR Director Victor Matveev, JINR Vice-director Mikhail Itkis, and Head of International Cooperation Department Dmitry Kamanin. Scientific Researcher Hanif Tanyildizi from the Izmir Institute of Technology (Turkey) who works in the Laboratory of Theoretical Physics took an active part in organization of the visit.

Dmitry Kamanin welcomed the guests with a survey presentation of JINR, focusing on the accelerator complex of the Laboratory of High Energy Physics and the progress of development of the Nuclotron-based Ion Collider Facility NICA. During an excursion to JINR, Director of the Laboratory of Neutron Physics Valery Shvetsov and Deputy Director of the Laboratory of Nuclear Reactions Sergey Sidorchuk acquainted the Turkish diplomats with fundamental and applied scientific research of their Laboratories.

Representatives of JINR noted that the first contacts of JINR and Turkey started in 1995 when Turkish students came to JINR as scholarship holders for the first time. Over the past 10 years JINR has signed Collaboration Protocols with the major Turkish universities and institutes: the Izmir Institute of High Technology, the University in Adana (Cukura University, CU), the Middle East Technical University in Ankara (Middle East Technical University, METU), the Universiti Bosphorus (Bogazici University, BU) in Istanbul and the University of Canakkale (COMU). Today and other Turkish organizations have expressed interest in possible cooperation with JINR: Turkish Atomic Energy Agency, Nuclear Research Akdeniz University, Institute for Nuclear Research of the Aegean University. Today other Turkish organizations also expressed interest in possible cooperation with JINR: the Turkish Atomic Energy Authority, the Akdeniz University for Nuclear Research, the Institute for Nuclear Research of the Aegean University.

The visit of the Ambassador was aimed at acquaintance with JINR and discussion of possibilities of significant enhancement of scientific and technical cooperation between JINR and Turkey; in particular, the JINR Directorate initiated discussion of prospects of signing the Cooperation Agreement at the governmental level (associate membership at JINR).

In conclusion, Mr. Ümit Yardım reported that he will initiate the dialogue between JINR and the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources of Turkey, together with the Turkish Atomic Energy Authority, that he will organize a visit of interested scientists to JINR, and will be glad to invite the JINR Directorate to the Embassy of Turkey in Moscow to continue the dialogue.
