Winners of 2025 OGANESSON Prize announced

On 15 September 2025, the winners of the OGANESSON Prize were announced at the 138th session of the Scientific Council of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research. The prize was created at the suggestion and expense of Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS) Yuri Oganessian and established at the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research in 2023.

The winners of the OGANESSON Prize in 2025 are:

Michel Spiro, Emeritus Research Director at CEA, Chair of the Steering Committee of the Earth-Humanity Coalition, France.

He is awarded the prize for outstanding research in high energy physics and nuclear physics, along with passionate leadership in global initiatives supporting fundamental science.



Natalia Tarasova, Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS), Director of the Institute of Chemistry and Sustainable Development Problems at the Mendeleev University of Chemical Technology of Russia.

She receives the award for outstanding contribution to cooperation with international organizations and scientific unions (UNESCO, IUPAC, ISC), aimed at achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.

Arutyun Avetisyan, RAS Academician, Director of the RAS Institute for System Programming.

The award recognises his outstanding contribution to the creation of trustworthy artificial intelligence in scientific and applied fields and the training of highly qualified young specialists in modern information technology.



Alexei Semikhatov, Head of the Laboratory of the Theory of Fundamental Interactions at the RAS Lebedev Physical Institute, lecturer, and author of popular science films.

He is awarded for outstanding contribution to the Russian science communication, including quantum physics popularisation.


The 2025 OGANESSON Prize ceremony will take place next February in Moscow. The 2024 prize was awarded to the laureates on 14 February this year at the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts.

In 2022, Academician Yuri Oganessian received the Sber Scientific Prize for fundamental work on the synthesis of superheavy elements. Academician Oganessian decided to direct the 20 million roubles that he received to support young scientists and popularisers of science and cultivate talents in the field irrespective of their age.

The decision to award the prize is made by a jury of international experts chaired by Scientific Leader of the National Centre for Physics and Mathematics, RAS Academician Alexander Sergeev and approved by JINR Director, RAS Academician Grigory Trubnikov.

The OGANESSON Prize is awarded annually. Individual scientific, engineering, and technical specialists or teams of authors (no more than three people), whose contribution was decisive in solving scientific problems and/or popularisation projects, can participate in the competition for the prize.
