The JINR University Centre (UC) was established in 1991 to implement the Institute’s educational programme, primarily related to the training of highly qualified young specialists for conducting research in JINR’s laboratories and in the Memer States’ scientific centres. Mainly UC is aimed at implemeting the concept of “continuous education”: school – university – research centre. For this purpose, UC has created and is improving conditions for students and postgraduate students to participate in the work of the Institute’s scientific groups.
Training, practical workshops and internships in the Institute’s laboratories led by leading scientists are organized annualy for over 600 senior students and postgraduate students from universities of the Member States and Associate Members. Maintaining a sufficiently large flow of students allows for selecting the most capable young people to work at the Institute.
UC creates and coordinates a unified educational process for the JINR-based departments. At the beginning of each semester, the content of the database of educational courses in particle physics and quantum field theory, mathematical and statistical physics, condensed matter physics, nanostructure physics and neutron physics, nuclear physics, experimental facilities and information technologies, and the class schedule, is updated on the UC website.
The most important tools for attracting talented young people to the Institute are the international student practices in JINR’s research areas, student programmes START (STudent Advanced Research Training at JINR) and the online programme INTEREST (INTErnational REmote Student Training). Participants of these programmes attend lectures by leading JINR scientists and specialists and carry out educational and research projects in the Institute’s laboratories.
The UC coordinates the activities of the JINR Information Centres, which play a major role in promoting scientific and educational projects.
The UC participates in organizing and conducting International internships for scientific and administrative personnel JEMS “JINR Experience for Member States and Partner Countries”.
An engineering training workshop has been established on the basis of UC with the aim of intensifying educational programmes in the training of engineering and technical specialists for JINR and the Member States for existing and newly created modern physical facilities. The key feature of the workshop is work with real equipment.
Employees of the UC Department for Development and Creation of Educational Programmes work on creating a unified textbook and educational-methodological complex in physics and other natural sciences fields (mathematics, biology, natural science). The interactive exhibition JINR Main Facilities is of great interest.
UC works with schoolchildren and teachers. For schoolchildren in Dubna, with the support of JINR, the Inter-School Physics and Mathematics Elective and the UC Physics Practicum, scientific schools for students, international and interregional schools (ISS) are organized, robotics tournaments, and the annual “Days of Physics” festival are held. Since 2009, UC has annually organized Scientific Schools for Physics Teachers.
UC organizes group tours of the Institute’s sites for introductory and educational purposes.
UC provides training on labour protection and industrial safety requirements and organizes English language courses for JINR employees. UC hosts a Russian Spealing Club for Institute’s employees from other countries.
