Venue: bld. 215, room 347, Veksler and Baldin Laboratory of High Energy Physics, online on Zoom
Seminar topic: “Design, constrcuction, and performance of straw detector in NA62 rare kaon decay experiment”
Speaker: Hans Danielsson (CERN)
The NA62 spectrometer should measure with good accuracy the direction and momentum of secondary charged particle originating from the decay region. In order to minimize multiple scattering, the spectrometer is operated in vacuum without physical separation from the upstream decay volume. The straw tracker was chosen as the most promising detector to be operated in vacuum. A crucial feature of the straw tracker is the use of ultrasonically welded straws, and this technique was developed at JINR in collaboration with CERN. In total the detector contains over 15 km of straw ultrasonically welded straws. The design is made without frames and flanges close to the beam and limits interactions from accompanying beam particles. The detector was successfully installed and commissioned in the fall of 2014. This talk intends to give an overview of the design, construction and testing of the detector together with is performance over more than 10 years of operation. Finally, some highlights from the collaboration between CERN and JINR are shown.
