News, 23 July 2021

On 23 July, at 10 PM (Moscow time) a ceremonial opening of the panel “Mendeleev’s Periodic Table” will take place on the Volga embankment. It is 284 square metres large making it the biggest in Europe. The live broadcast of the event will be available in the group of the educational project “Bolshaya peremena” (lit. “Big break”).

The event will be held in the frames of the programme dedicated to the 65th anniversary of JINR and Dubna. Academician Yu. Ts. Oganessian will start the demonstration of the large panel “Mendeleev’s Periodic Table”. The Table is placed on the wall of the Archimedes Swimming Pool on the Volga River embankment and is clearly visible to citizens and guests, as well as passengers of numerous cruise ships sailing along the Volga.

The grandiose art object is intended to reflect not only the outstanding contribution of JINR scientists to the discovery of new chemical elements but also to contribute to the increase of interest of civil society, the youth first of all, in achievements of modern science.

“The panel is not just a decoration, it is, first of all, science popularisation, a kind of a story to Dubna citizens and guests about achievements of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research. Here, in Dubna, the Mendeleev’s great discovery found continuation: JINR scientists synthesised new chemical elements. The Table itself is inexhaustible. It will live in the scientific world, there will be new elements discovered, new formats of it, new laboratories to search for elements,” RAS Academician Yuri Oganessian said.

The ceremonial opening of the panel “Mendeleev’s Periodic Table” will be held in the mixed online-offline format and will be attended by Minister of Science and Higher Education of Russia Valery Falkov, Governor of the Moscow region Andrey Vorobyov, President of the International Union of Theoretical and Applied Physics Michel Spiro, President of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry Christopher Brett, JINR Director Grigory Trubnikov, and Academician Yuri Tsolakovich Oganessian.

Due to the difficult epidemiological situation, we invite everyone to join the opening ceremony online in the group of the educational project “Big break”:
