Frank Laboratory of Neutron Physics

Seminar of the Division of Nuclear Physics

Chair: Valery Shvetsov

Date and Time: Wednesday, 20 May 2026, at 11:00

Venue: Conference hall, Frank Laboratory of Neutron Physics

Seminar topic: “Surface diagnostics with ion beams at the IPPE Accelerator Complex”

Speaker: Alexander Gurbich (Leypunsky Institute of Physics and Power Engineering, Obninsk)

Abstract:

The presentation examines surface diagnostic methods implemented at the accelerator complex of the Institute of Physics and Power Engineering using beams of protons, deuterons, ³He, ⁴He, and ¹²C ions. Based on the type of interaction of the accelerated beams with surface nuclei, these methods include Rutherford and non-Rutherford elastic scattering (RBS and EBS), nuclear reaction analysis (NRA), elastic recoil detection analysis (ERDA), particle-induced gamma-ray emission (PIGE), and particle-induced X-ray emission (PIXE). Methodological improvements are discussed, along with examples of elemental analysis of semiconductor structures and reactor materials, studies of hydrogen isotope accumulation and migration in metals, mass transport in fusion devices, and certification of thin targets used in nuclear physics experiments. Results of measurements and evaluations of differential cross sections required for extracting concentration profiles of target elements from measured spectra are presented. The current status of the experimental cross-section data library IBANDL and the evaluated cross-section calculator SigmaCalc, both developed under the auspices of the IAEA, is discussed.
