Baikal news

News, 12 April 2022

A regular expedition on the construction of the Baikal-GVD deep-underwater neutrino telescope is close to completion. Acoustic modems have been delivered to Lake Baikal.

Without them, it would have been impossible to assemble the 10th cluster and two new experimental strings of the future 11th cluster. It is due to the fact that acoustic modems are installed on the cable just like optical modules. They are necessary to monitor the strings’ positions in real-time mode. Strings may decline from their usual positions because of underwater flows.

It should be reminded that the current expedition on the construction of the neutrino telescope started in February 2022. Within two months of the expedition-2022, the Baikal-GVD collaboration is going to install two new clusters of optical modules, repair and modernise already installed ones, as well as continue working on the development of the data transmission system through optical lines inside the facility.

The Baikal-GVD Neutrino Telescope is being constructed by the efforts of the international collaboration with the leading role of the RAS Institute for Nuclear Research ( Moscow), the initiator of the experiment and the founder of the field “neutrino astronomy” in the world, and the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research ( Dubna). In total, more than 70 scientists and engineers from eleven research centres in Russia, Germany, Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Kazakhstan take part in the project.
