On 19 October 2026, the fourteenth Joint Workshop on Physics of Strong Interacting Systems began in Nanjing, organized by the Institute of Theoretical Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (ITP CAS) and the Bogoliubov Laboratory of Theoretical Physics. Held since 2010, the international forum is alternately hosted by China and the Member States of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research.

The Organizing Committee Co-chairs are BLTP JINR Deputy Director Nikolay Antonenko, ITP CAS Professor Shan-Gui Zhou, and Professor of the Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics (NUAA) Xiao-Tao He.

Welcome speeches were delivered by Dean of the NUAA College of Materials Science and Technology Dongdong Gu, NUAA Council Deputy Chair Liang Zhen, President of East China Normal University, CAS Academician Yugang Ma, Head of the European Liaison Department of the CAS Bureau of International Cooperation Juexin Cao, BLTP JINR Director Dmitry Kazakov, and ITP CAS Director Shan-Gui Zhou. The speakers emphasised the high importance of this format for the planned strengthening and development of bilateral cooperation between JINR and Chinese research organizations.

The number of participants is growing every year. This time, the event brought together about 130 researchers, primarily young scientists. The Joint Institute is represented by 29 employees.

BLTP JINR Director Dmitry Kazakov delivered the first scientific talk, discussing non-renormalisable theories. During the morning sessions, research was presented by BLTP leading researcher Valentin Nesterenko (“Microscopic analysis of scissor mode in 254No”) and leading researcher at the Laboratory of Nuclear Reactions at JINR Igor Izosimov (“Wigner’s SU(4) spin-isospin symmetry and MNT & fragmentation nuclear reactions”). The afternoon programme continued with presentations by BLTP scientists: researcher Ivan Rogov (“Dinuclear system model in description of alpha-decay and spontaneous fission processes”), senior researcher Azam Rahmatinejad (“Toward a dinuclear-system description of cluster states in medium-mass N ≈ Z nuclei”), and researcher Anna Bezbakh (“Analysis of alpha-decay chains of elements 119 and 120 in the two-centre shell model: competition between allowed and forbidden transitions”).

In total, over the four days of the workshop, 81 scientific talks will be presented. The topics cover the following research directions:

  • Study of complete fusion reactions leading to the formation of superheavy nuclei;
  • Quasi-fission and transfer-type reactions and production of exotic nuclei;
  • Shape and K isomers in the heaviest nuclei;
  • Cluster approach to nuclear fission;
  • Complex emission from strongly excited nuclei;
  • Research on nuclear structure with modern microscopical methods;
  • The equation of state of isospin asymmetric nuclear matter;
  • Decays of exotic nuclei;
  • Hadron spectrum and structure;
  • Effective theories of strong interaction.

The Joint Workshop on Physics of Strong Interacting Systems continues to serve as a reliable platform for expanding the partnership of the JINR Member States with China’s scientific community, exchanging experience, and creating new research collaborations.
