On 5 June 2026, the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research received Cuban students and specialists undergoing training at the National Research University Moscow Power Engineering Institute under additional professional education programmes. They were accompanied by MPEI Vice-Rector on International Relations Alexander Tarasov and representatives of the university’s Directorate for the Development of Integration Policy. The visit was part of the educational programme for listeners of the MPEI Centre for Targeted Training opened in Havana jointly with the Unión Eléctrica electric power corporation.

The meeting began at the University Centre, where the delegates learned about the main areas of JINR’s work. The heads of the JINR University Centre and the International Cooperation Department – Dmitry Kamanin and Otilia Ana Culicov – took part in discussing cooperation prospects in training scientific and engineering personnel for the Republic of Cuba.

At the Veksler and Baldin Laboratory of High Energy Physics, the specialists visited the NICA Complex site, getting acquainted with the Nuclotron and touring the Synchrophasotron Hall. The excursion continued at the factory of superconducting magnets. The demonstration of elements of the niobium-tin superconducting cable and the cryostat for helium and current input – key components of systems for creating powerful magnets – became an interesting topic for professional discussion.

The delegation was accompanied by representatives of the national group of the Republic of Cuba at JINR: Deputy Head of the VBLHEP JINR Scientific and Methodological Department of Silicon Tracking Systems Cesar Ceballos Sanchez and a senior researcher at the Laboratory of Nuclear Problems Katherin Shtejer Diaz.

“It was a great pleasure for me to receive a delegation of Cuban master’s and postgraduate students, as well as experienced engineers heading Cuba’s leading energy companies. They are undergoing training in Russia to help solve the problems of the energy sector of our country, currently facing a very difficult situation”, Katherin Shtejer Diaz shared. “On the excursion, I saw how glad they were to hear detailed explanations by JINR University Centre specialists about opportunities for training young scientists and developing advanced technologies. Engineers were particularly interested in the unique equipment we work with. I am sure that back in Cuba, this group will share information about the broad prospects that JINR opens up not only in fundamental science, but also in engineering education. This will be another important step in strengthening cooperation between Cuba and JINR”.
