Lecture course «Higgs mechanism in the Standard Model and beyond». Lecture #1

Education

Lecture #1 on 1 November 2016

All intrested are kindly invited to hear a course of lectures on Higgs boson physics «Higgs mechanism in the Standard Model and beyond». The 6 seminars of the lecture course will be held on 1-3 and 8-10 November 2016, from 10.00 am until 12.00 am in the Conference Hall of the Dzhelepov Laboratory of Nuclear Problems.

Speaker: I.P. Ivanov (CFTP, Instituto Superior Tecnico, U. Lisboa)

Seminars topics, 1-3 November:

  1. Overview: electroweak theory and the role(s) of the Higgs mechanism. Hopes from bSM. Higgs mechanisms (insights into fermion properties, CP violation, FCNC). A very brief history.
  2. Abelian Higgs model: giving mass to the gauge boson; giving mass to the fermion, basic properties of the Higgs boson.
  3. Full electroweak theory and the Brout-Englert-Higgs mechanism:
    • electroweak lagrangian before EWSB and symmetries,
    • massive W and Z,
    • the ρ-parameter and custodial symmetry,
    • masses and mixing of fermions within SM,
    • a brief outline of the SM Higgs boson properties.
