Scientists and engineers of the Laboratory of High Energy Physics at JINR from Russia and Kazakhstan created the Straw Tension Meter — software for measuring the tension of anode wires in straw detector tubes. Tracking detectors based on thin-walled drift tubes (straws) can be used to determine the coordinates of particle flight in accelerator experiments and in some neutrino projects. In particular, a starw tracking system will be created for the SPD Detector at NICA.
Straw Tension Meter
The program is designed for measuring the tension of the anode wire in straw detector tubes, systematising and storing measurement results, and storing parameters of various wire types. The software can be used in the production and installation of straw detectors at the point of use at experimental facilities to monitor the integrity and quality of wire tension. In addition, it can help perform control measurements during the calibration of straw detectors.
Functional capabilities:
- receiving and displaying the intensity of an electrical signal versus time via the MODBUS protocol;
- calculating and displaying the frequency spectrum of oscillations of the received signal; determining the main oscillation frequency of the received signal;
- editing and storing the values of the physical properties of the wire under study as well as parameters for determining tension quality.
The Joint Institute for Nuclear Research received the certificate of state registration of the program on 5 February 2026.
Congratulations to the team of authors on receiving state registration!
