RAS President proposed establishing a laser center at JINR

RAS President A. Sergeev proposed establishing a powerful laser centre in Dubna for the development of nuclear photonics. It will use the capabilities of two research fields – heavy-ion physics and physics of superintense laser fields – and continue research on superheavy ion production.

“When the NICA collider is constructed at JINR and the research on the production of heavy ions is pursued, we would like to join forces and establish one of the powerful laser complexes,” said RAS President at the meeting on the physics of superheavy nuclei organized at JINR.

As the RAS President said, now there is a tendency of merging heavy-ion physics and physics of superintense laser fields, and the directions of nuclear photonics are actively developing in the world.

“In fact, modern laser facilities produce such powerful laser pulses that electric and magnetic fields can “reach” nuclear processes (and not only conventional atomic processes, e.g., atomic ionization, acceleration of electrons, ions, etc.),” Alexander Sergeev explained.
