Saratov State University master’s students completed internship at JINR

The Joint Institute for Nuclear Research held a summer internship for students of the Institute of Physics of Saratov Chernyshevsky National Research State University (SGU) specialising in biophotonics. The master’s students worked at two JINR laboratories.

The first track of the internship took place at the Sector of Radiation Physiology of the Laboratory of Radiation Biology at JINR, where students learned about modern experimental radiobiology methods and studied the fundamental concepts of radiation physiology and medicine. The participants were engaged in the full cycle of experimental morphological studies, which represent a key stage of preclinical trials and allow objectively assessing radiation damage to tissues at cellular and subcellular levels.

The Laboratory of Nuclear Problems at JINR hosted the second track of the internship. The participants collaborated with a scientific group engaged in developing diffusion optics methodology in the time domain. The students learned utilising an experimental facility assembled from modern components. It includes a laser diode, a silicon photomultiplier, and a time-to-digital converter based on a programmable logic integrated circuit, ensuring high-precision registration of the signal arrival time. The hands-on work allowed studying the physics of light propagation in scattering media more deeply and mastering modern optical measurement methods.

The summer internship at JINR provided the biophotonics students with a unique opportunity to work at the intersection of biology and physics. The combination of mastery of in vivo experiment, histological analysis, and optoelectronic equipment operation forms a comprehensive skill set required to solve today’s biomedicine tasks and create non-invasive diagnostics systems.
