On 26 May 2026, a Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Switzerland to the Russian Federation Jürg Burri and Swiss Embassy Science, Technology, and Education Officer Andrey Melnikov paid a working visit to the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research to get acquainted with JINR’s scientific infrastructure and studies.
The programme started with a meeting with the Institute’s leadership. JINR Director, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences Grigory Trubnikov welcomed the diplomats. He highlighted the rich history of scientific cooperation between Dubna and Switzerland.
In turn, Jürg Burri noted that throughout his diplomatic career, he had repeatedly been convinced of the close and continuous interconnection of international scientific communities. He noted that his visit’s goal is to personally familiarise himself with the infrastructure of JINR, as well as to find out what practical and logistical challenges scientists are facing today in order to provide possible assistance in overcoming them. “Today, supporting international research is more important than ever”, the Ambassador said.
As a result of the meeting, the parties expressed mutual readiness to maintain working contacts, seek effective mechanisms to overcome arising issues, and maintain an open dialogue in the interests of developing global science.
The programme of the working visit continued with an introduction to the research infrastructure. Jürg Burri and Andrey Melnikov visited the site of the NICA Complex at the Laboratory of High Energy Physics, where they witnessed firsthand the scale of the flagship megascience project. At the Laboratory of Information Technologies, the embassy representatives visited the MLIT JINR machine hall to learn about the capabilities of the JINR Multifunctional Information and Computing Complex (MICC) and the Govorun Supercomputer.
