Higher education

Are you just starting your journey in science—or already writing your dissertation? At the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR), every student and postgraduate receives not just a stipend, but a real opportunity to take part in international research from their very first year. Here, you won’t have to “wait your turn”—you’ll begin working in laboratories, analyzing accelerator data, and publishing in scientific journals right away.

JINR University Programme

JINR runs its own University Programme—a unique educational platform fully integrated into the Institute’s scientific projects. It includes:

  • Internships for undergraduate and master’s students—from 2 weeks to 6 months in any of JINR’s 7 laboratories;
  • PhD studies in 12 scientific specialties—with the opportunity to defend a PhD thesis and publish in international journals;
  • Scientific supervision—by leading JINR scientists, recipients of international awards and grants;
  • International academic mobility—internships at CERN, GSI, Fermilab, JINR User Centres, and other world-class research facilities.

Stipends and Financial Support

All participants in the University Programme receive:

  • a monthly JINR stipend (amount varies by level and country of origin);
  • accommodation in a JINR guesthouse or dormitory;
  • travel reimbursement to the internship location (for citizens of JINR Member States);
  • access to health insurance and social support.

Research Areas

Training and research are conducted in the most advanced fields:

  • High-energy and particle physics;
  • Nuclear physics and synthesis of new elements;
  • Neutron physics and condensed matter;
  • Radiation biology and medical physics;
  • Information technologies, distributed computing, and Big Data;
  • Accelerator technologies and detector systems.

How to Join?

Selection takes place twice a year—in spring and autumn. To apply, you need to:

  1. Register on the portal uc.jinr.ru;
  2. Upload a motivation letter, CV, and a recommendation letter from your academic supervisor;
  3. Indicate your preferred laboratory and research topic;
  4. Participate in an online interview with programme coordinators.

Applications are open to students and postgraduates from all JINR Member States. Candidates with experience in programming, mathematical modelling, and experimental physics are especially encouraged to apply.

Why Choose JINR?

  • Real science from day one—you won’t be copying papers; you’ll be conducting experiments;
  • International environment—over 5,000 scientists from 60 countries;
  • Access to unique facilities—NICA, IBR-2 reactor, Phasotron, U-400 cyclotron;
  • Career launchpad—graduates go on to work at CERN, NASA, leading universities, and major IT corporations.

Your scientific career doesn’t start “someday.” It starts here—and now.
