The history of JINR-based departments started with two departments of the Faculty of Physics of Moscow State University (MSU), established in Dubna in 1961 at the branch of the MSU Skobeltsyn Institute of Nuclear Physics: the Nuclear Theory Department (headed by Dmitry Blokhintsev) and the Particle Physics Department (headed by Vladimir Veksler).
Currently, JINR is educating physicists at 14 departments of six federal universities in Russia. The training covers nuclear physics, particle physics, condensed matter physics, theoretical and technical physics, and radiobiology. The University Centre coordinates a unified educational process for these departments with the aim of training highly qualified personnel for JINR and the Member States. To this end, the UC involves leading Institute employees in educational activities and helps organize the scientific work of upper‑year students within JINR research teams.
