School students

At the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research, we believe the future of science begins with the first inspired “why?” — and that question most often comes from a school desk. That’s why JINR creates unique opportunities for school students passionate about physics, mathematics, computer science, and engineering. We don’t just teach — we engage, open doors to real science, and help every talented student unlock their potential.

Physics and Mathematics Enrichment Classes in Dubna

In partnership with the Government of Moscow Oblast and the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (MIPT), JINR runs an inter-school Physics and Mathematics Enrichment Programme in Dubna — one of JINR’s flagship educational initiatives. Every week, students in grades 7–11 receive advanced training in:

  • Physics — from classical mechanics to an introduction to particle physics and accelerators;
  • Mathematics — with a focus on Olympiad problem solving, mathematical logic, and applied thinking;
  • Computer Science and Programming — including Python, algorithms, basics of machine learning, and working with big data;
  • Robotics and Engineering Projects — building, programming, and controlling robotic systems.

Classes are taught by MIPT faculty, JINR scientists, and experienced practitioner-teachers. The programme is designed not only to prepare students for Olympiads and admission to top universities, but also to develop scientific intuition and research skills.

Follow the schedule and news of the enrichment classes in the official VKontakte group.

JINR Summer and Winter Schools

Each year, we invite school students from JINR Member States to our scientific and educational schools, where they:

  • attend lectures by leading JINR scientists;
  • carry out hands-on experiments in real laboratories;
  • participate in masterclasses on nuclear physics, detector technologies, IT, and synchrotron radiation;
  • learn in an international environment, interacting with young researchers and peers from around the world.

This is more than just a holiday — it’s immersion into a global scientific community, where every participant can feel like a part of cutting-edge international research.

Scientific Projects and Olympiads

JINR supports student participation in:

  • the International Experimental Physics Olympiad (IEPhO);
  • Competitions and research conferences for school students;
  • Projects involving real data analysis from accelerator experiments (in simplified formats);
  • the “Young Researcher” programme, where students can complete their own mini-research project under the mentorship of a JINR scientist.

Excursions and Public Outreach Events

We regularly organise:

  • Guided tours of JINR laboratories — including the Synchrophasotron, Neutron Physics Laboratory, and computing centres;
  • Open Days, science festivals, and lectures for school students;
  • Online lectures and webinars with live Q&A sessions with scientists.

How to Get Started?

  • Live in Dubna or Moscow Oblast? Enrol in the enrichment classes through your school teacher or directly with the organisers.
  • From another JINR Member State? Watch for announcements of summer schools and competitions on uc.jinr.ru and JINR’s social media.
  • Passionate about science and want to do more? Write to us at education@jinr.ru — we’ll help you join our educational initiatives.

Don’t wait for others to make discoveries. Start making them yourself — today.
