PRUE students at JINR

News, 12 December 2023

On 6 – 7 December 2023, the Meshcheryakov Laboratory of Information Technologies hosted a “Research Activities of JINR” seminar. Second-year students of the Special Faculty of Talented Youth “Foresight Higher School” and third- and fourth-year students of the Higher School of Cyber Technologies, Mathematics and Statistics of Plekhanov Russian University of Economics (PRUE) attended MLIT lectures, visited the “JINR Basic facilities” exhibition, and went on an excursion to VBLHEP JINR. On 12 December 2023, MLIT hosted students of the PRUE Economic Lyceum.

The students were welcomed by MLIT Scientific Leader Vladimir Korenkov, who is also Head of PRUE’s Scientific Laboratory “Cloud Technologies and Big Data Analytics”. He spoke about the major directions of MLIT activities and modern IT technologies for solving scientific and applied tasks. MLIT researchers Igor Pelevanyuk and Maxim Zuev gave a tour of the JINR Multifunctional Information and Computing Complex. The lecture by Maxim Zuev was devoted to tasks solved on the “Govorun” Supercomputer.

At the Veksler and Baldin Laboratory of High Energy Physics, the students VBLHEP researchers Dmitry Dryablov, Arkady Terekhin, and Alexey Aparin told the students about the NICA flagship project: what the accelerator complex under construction embraces, what makes it unique, and what experiments are to be performed on it.

As part of the seminar, the students visited the interactive exhibition “JINR Basic Facilities”. Head of the VBLHEP Scientific and Experimental Department of Heavy Ion Physics at RHIC Yuri Panebrattsev delivered an informative lecture on physics, and Nikita Sidorov (VBLHEP) and Tatiana Strokovskaya (UC) elaborated on the history of JINR, the major facilities of the Laboratories, and their significance in the modern world. Thanks to the interactive models presented at the exhibition, the students had the chance to visit all the Laboratories of the Institute and immerse in the atmosphere of ongoing experiments.

The seminar included additional lectures and tutorials for the students within. Igor Pelevanyuk delivered a lecture on computing in science, and Alexander Uzhinskiy spoke about machine learning in applied tasks solved at MLIT and conducted a tutorial “Google Earth Engine for geospatial data analysis on a planetary scale”.
