On 6 November 2026, the names of the fourth OGANESSON Prize laureates were announced at the session of the Committee of Plenipotentiaries of the Governments of the Member States of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. The Prize is awarded annually for significant achievements in theoretical and experimental research in physics, chemistry, biology, and applied problems, as well as for creative endeavours that popularise science by means of educational and scientific activities.

Grigory Trubnikov announces the laureates at the CP JINR session

The prize founders are Scientific Leader of the Flerov Laboratory of Nuclear Reactions Yuri Oganessian and JINR. The decision to award the prize is made by a jury of international experts chaired by Scientific Leader of the National Centre for Physics and Mathematics, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS) Alexander Sergeev and approved by JINR Director, RAS Academician Grigory Trubnikov.

In 2026, the OGANESSON Prize is awarded to:

  • Evgeny Adamov, Doctor of Technical Sciences, Scientific Leader of the Dollezhal Research and Development Institute of Power Engineering (NIKIET), Honoured Worker of Science and Technology of the Russian Federation, for his outstanding contribution to the preservation and development of the Russian nuclear science and industry as well as to the popularisation of atomic technology;
  • Andrey Butenko, Acting Director of the Laboratory of High Energy Physics at JINR, for his bold engineering and scientific solutions in the development of the most advanced nuclear physics accelerators, including superconducting facilities;
  • Emanuele Vardaci, Professor of Physics at the University of Naples Federico II, for his fundamental contribution to investigating the mechanism of heavy-ion reactions leading to superheavy element synthesis;
  • Yulia Gorbunova, RAS Academician, Doctor of Chemistry, Skoltech President, Chief Researcher at the RAS Kurnakov Institute of General and Inorganic Chemistry and the RAS Institute of Physical Chemistry and Electrochemistry, for her fundamental contribution to the development of coordination and supramolecular chemistry as well as for outstanding public, pedagogical, and international activities in fundamental chemistry and materials science.

The official award ceremony will take place on 19 February 2027 at the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts.

In 2022, Academician Yuri Oganessian received the Sber Scientific Prize for fundamental work on the synthesis of superheavy elements. Academician Oganessian decided to direct the 20 million roubles he received to support young scientists and popularisers of science and cultivate talents in the field irrespective of their age. For this purpose, in April 2023, Yuri Oganessian established the OGANESSON Prize that reflects the international character of Dubna’s scientific centre by uniting talented researchers and science popularisers from around the world.

Individual scientific, engineering, and technical specialists or teams of authors (no more than three people), whose contribution was decisive in solving scientific problems and/or popularisation projects, can participate in the competition for the prize.
