Founded in 1896, Tomsk Polytechnic University is the oldest technical university in the Asian part of Russia. Today, the university is one of Russia’s leading scientific and educational centres. TPU specialises in advanced research on nuclear technology, energy, new materials, and industrial digitalisation.

Researchers from JINR and TPU cooperate especially actively in high energy physics. Students and postgraduates of Tomsk Polytechnic University regularly come to Dubna for internships and training. In 2022, the first JINR Information Centre in the Siberian part of Russia opened at TPU to introduce Tomsk researchers, students, and teachers to the Institute’s work and international scientific achievements.

Director of the Joint Institute Grigory Trubnikov spoke with high regard of the university’s scientific and technological potential: “TPU has always been one of the most powerful research and educational centres not only in Siberia, but in all of Russia. For JINR, it is extremely important to rely on such strong partners with a unique engineering school when developing the most advanced equipment for megascience projects. I am confident that the signed agreement will greatly enhance the quality of our cooperation. It will allow us not only to work on new research facilities, but also to train highly qualified specialists for them, combining the experience of JINR and the competencies of TPU specialists”.

“JINR is a flagship of Russian and world science in both fundamental and applied physics. It is the country’s leading megascience expert”, TPU Acting Rector Leonid Sukhikh noted. “Tomsk Polytechnic University is already involved in a number of the Institute’s projects. For example, we are part of the FLAP Collaboration and have recently joined the MPD Collaboration at the NICA Collider, where our scientists are conducting theoretical and experimental studies. We are preparing to participate in neon collision experiments. The agreement formalises the established cooperation and provides for the development of new areas of interaction. The key fields are the design and construction of complex scientific facilities, entire units of research equipment, and associated structures. TPU has already confidently demonstrated its competencies in this direction when creating stations for the Siberian Circular Photon Source“.

By the decision of the university’s Academic Council, dated 30 April 2026, Grigory Trubnikov received the title of TPU Honorary Professor. This title is an expression of deep gratitude to outstanding individuals for their significant contribution to the university’s development. Leonid Sukhikh presented the JINR Director with a robe, a personalised medal, and an Honorary Professor diploma.

“It seems to me that Tomsk Polytechnic University is not just a unique, but an outstanding scientific and educational organization”, Grigory Trubnikov responded in his speech. “All the most important words are written in your motto: ‘Knowledge, freedom, and prosperity’. Couldn’t have said it better myself. Let me thank you for such a prestigious award and personally congratulate Tomsk Polytechnic University on a jubilee – the 130th anniversary. I wish the university prosperity, good students, governmental support, and great victories”.

On 16 October, Grigory Trubnikov will give a popular science lecture to Tomsk students and schoolchildren entitled “Research on the fundamental properties of matter: where are we going? Megascience facilities in Russia and the world: from nuclear physics to the national economy”. In addition, during the visit, the JINR Director will participate in a series of roundtables and meetings dedicated to discussing megascience projects and promising high-energy physics studies.
