From 12 to 15 October 2026, Tashkent hosted the the 12th Nuclear Science and Its Application international conference dedicated to the 70th anniversary of the Institute of Nuclear Physics of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Uzbekistan (INP AS RUz). JINR actively participated in the event: the Advisory Committee included representatives of the Institute’s Directorate and leading FLNP and BLTP JINR scientists. Employees of all the Institute’s laboratories gave plenary and sectional talks.

In total, over 160 scientists and specialists from 11 countries, including Australia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, China, Italy, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, the Republic of Korea, Russia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, participated in the event.

The Nuclear Science and Its Application conference was aimed at discussing modern trends and achievements in fundamental and applied nuclear physics, particularly in nuclear energy and life sciences. Alongside the event, participants from different countries talked about the issues of establishing and expanding international scientific cooperation.

At the opening of the conference, a ceremony took place to lay flowers at the monument to Academician Bekhzod Yuldashev, who made an invaluable contribution to the development of partnership between JINR and the Republic of Uzbekistan. In his welcome speech, JINR Vice-Director Sergey Kulikov noted that the INP AS RUz is a reliable long-standing partner of JINR and one of the key research institutions in Uzbekistan and Central Asia.

The scientific programme included over 160 talks on a wide range of topics: theoretical and experimental nuclear physics, nuclear energy and medicine, radiation condensed matter physics as well as the development prospects of nuclear energy facilities. The participants’ works were included in the conference proceedings.

Four employees of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research spoke at the plenary sessions. Head of the FLNP JINR Division of Condensed Matter Research and Developments Aleksander Belushkin made a presentation entitled “Neutron research of ferroelectrics, ferroelastics, and superprotonic materials. A historical overview and current developments”, which attracted great interest from the audience. Deputy Scientific Leader of the Laboratory of Nuclear Reactions Mikhail Itkis commented on the history, modern achievements, and prospects of research in heavy ion physics at the Joint Institute. Director of the Laboratory of Neutron Physics Egor Lychagin discussed the prospects for developing the experimental infrastructure at the IBR-2 Reactor. The project of the prospective DSTAR Modular Muon Detector was presented by Head of the Weak Interaction Sector of the Laboratory of Nuclear Problems Mark Shirchenko.

At the sections, 11 JINR speakers presented the results of their studies, many of which were carried out in cooperation with colleagues from Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, China, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, Serbia, and Uzbekistan as well as Russian universities. Fundamental physics talks demonstrated the broad scope of theoretical and experimental research conducted at JINR in neutrinos physics, superheavy element properties, processes of fission and fusion of nuclides in nuclear reactions, and prospects for studying baryonic matter at the NICA Complex. JINR employees’ presentations on the issues of modern nuclear medicine, radiation biology, radioecology, and radiation materials science attracted the attention of the audience as well.
