A ceremony took place on Komsomolskaya Embankment to open the renovated JINR Yacht Club and the streetball court on 25 July 2026 – the City Day of Dubna, where the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research is based in.
“Together with the Dubna administration and the governor, we continue to make our city better and more comfortable. Today, the sports facility complex on the Volga River embankment includes a skate park, tennis courts, a cycle path, a swimming pool, and a beach. And now this basketball complex, which had been in a rather poor condition for a quarter of a century, meets the most modern standards as well. We are presenting it to our beloved city and our Institute”, JINR Director Grigory Trubnikov commented.
“The Joint Institute has carried out extensive work to upgrade the city’s sports facilities, suitable both for intense practice and for professional competitions. This high standard is a hallmark of our city. Residents express strong approval of all these modern projects”, Head of the Dubna City District Maxim Tikhomirov emphasised.
Head of the JINR Social Infrastructure Management Andrey Tamonov highlighted the Streetball Association as the project partner. In autumn, Dubna is set to host the first major competition in this sport; in the future, JINR will continue collaborating with the Association to hold regular tournaments and master classes. In addition, Andrey Tamonov emphasised that the court will be available for all citizens.
Captain of the Institute’s basketball team, MLIT software engineer Mikhail Matveev expressed commendation to the leadership of the Joint Institute. He noted that the new professional, wear-resistant acrylic coating with shock-absorbing layers ensures the comfort of athletes by reducing joint loading.
The courts include vandal-proof backboards, modern lighting, new fencing, and spectator areas. Two rings at different heights are installed on the streetball court for children.
New buildings for storing equipment, life jackets, and other inventory replaced the 1960s wooden structures of the JINR Yacht Club.
“Today we are opening a beautiful, elegant complex. These wonderful white “sails” are a symbol of hope, peace, and international science. We sincerely thank the designers and builders for implementing this project – a real adornment of our city”, Grigory Trubnikov said. The JINR Director noted that not only employees of the Institute, but also residents and guests of Dubna of various ages could now sail at the renovated yacht club.
Thanks to the support of the Joint Institute, the Atom sailing club opened in 2024. In adidtion, the yacht club offers windsurfing, SUP surfing, and rowing classes for adults.
