Seminars, 02 April 2014

A regular meeting of the joint scientific seminar “Physics on the Large Hadron Collider” which is organized by the RDMS CMS collaboration of Russian institutes and JINR Member States that take part in the LHC experiment Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) will be held on 23 April 2014, at 11 am (Moscow time) in the International Conference Hall.

Speaker: Carlo Rubbia (IASS, Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies, Potsdam, Germany GSSI-INFN, Gran Sasso Science Institute, L’Aquila, Italy) «The Future of Energy»

The state of the art of the energy development in Europe and worldwide will be discussed, with specific consideration on the need of stability of the climate and the existence and limits of an Anthropogenic Era. The potentialities of curbing unwanted emissions with special consideration on innovative use of fossils and the realistic future role of renewable energies will be described. Can some form of Geo-engineering be introduced in order to compensate the effects of the emissions coming from fossils? In particular the alternative of stratospheric SO2 cooling will be critically discussed. Finally several innovative methods under study at IASS to curb emissions from fossils will be briefly described and in particular 1) high power and long distance Superconducting electricity transmission; 2) vast and unconventional Natural Gas sources like Shales and Clathrates; 3) Natural Gas burning without any CO2 emission; and 4) the use of Methanol as a liquid fuel for transportation combining hydrogenic fossils or eventually solar hydrogen with already “spent” and recovered CO2 accumulation.

You can also participate in the meeting, ask questions and take part in discussions via video conference system points at INR ("Pitomnik", Moscow), JINR (ICH, Dubna), LPI (Moscow), PNPI (Gatchina), CERN (40-R-A10), TSU (Tomsk), ASU (Barnaul), KSU (Kemerovo), RSI (Tomsk), NSTU (Novosibirsk), YSU (Yaroslavl).

The seminar webcast will be available without special equipment at http://rdms.jinr.ru/webcast.
