Scientific-engineering group

At the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR), the Scientific and Engineering Group (SEG) has been created for talented engineers and future scientists — a unique platform where theory meets metal, code meets detectors, and your ideas meet real experiments.

What is the Scientific and Engineering Group?

The SEG is a youth engineering team at JINR that brings together undergraduate, master’s, and PhD students in engineering, physics, and applied mathematics. Group members don’t just observe science — they design, assemble, test, and operate key components of world-class facilities such as the NICA accelerator complex, the MPD and BM@N detectors, beam control systems, and much more.

What will you be working on?

  • Developing and upgrading detector systems, data acquisition electronics, and trigger systems;
  • Designing and testing vacuum, magnetic, and cooling modules for accelerators;
  • Working with real-time automation and control systems;
  • Participating in the installation and commissioning of equipment at experimental sites;
  • Mastering industrial and research tools such as CAD modelling, microcontrollers, FPGA, Python, C++, LabVIEW, and more.

Why does it matter?

Today, JINR is implementing one of the most ambitious scientific projects of our time — the NICA (Nuclotron-based Ion Collider fAcility). To bring it to full operation, we need not only physicists, but also next-generation engineers — exactly like you. Joining the SEG isn’t just an internship “for the record” — it’s a real contribution to an international scientific project.

What opportunities do you get?

  • Access to unique JINR laboratories and production facilities;
  • Mentorship from leading JINR engineers and scientists;
  • A monthly JINR stipend and accommodation support;
  • The chance to co-author scientific publications and attend international conferences;
  • A career launch in high-tech engineering — at JINR, CERN, Rosatom, Roscosmos, or in the IT and deep-tech industry.

Who can join?

We are looking for undergraduate and postgraduate students from JINR Member States with backgrounds in:

  • Applied Physics;
  • Nuclear Technologies;
  • Radio Engineering and Electronics;
  • Information Systems and Software Engineering;
  • Mechatronics and Robotics;
  • Thermal Physics and Vacuum Technology.

Experience with CAD tools, microcontrollers, Linux, programming, and technical English is highly valued.

How to apply?

Recruitment to the Scientific and Engineering Group takes place annually. To apply:

  1. Register on the portal uc.jinr.ru;
  2. Submit your CV, a motivation letter, and examples of your projects (GitHub, drawings, schematics);
  3. Pass a technical interview with SEG coordinators.
