Igor Nikolayevich Semenyushkin

30.12.1928 – 20.06.2020

Igor Nikolayevich Semenyushkin was born on 30 December 1928 in Sevastopol, Crimean region. In 1952, he graduated from the Leningrad Polytechnical Institute, and in 1956, he obtained a post-graduate degree at Khlopin Radium Institute AS USSR. From 10 February 1956, Igor Nikolayevich Semenyushkin worked at JINR as a junior researcher in the Electrophysical Laboratory first, and since July 1956 he was shifted to the Laboratory of High Energies established in March 1956.

I. N. Semenyushkin greatly contributed to the long-term efficient operation of the accelerator complex of the JINR Synchrophasotron, its modernization and development of the first accelerator complex of relativistic nuclei. During 26 years in the position of Deputy Director of the Laboratory, he directly participated in the solution of many scientific and technical issues of creation and development of the injection complex, increase of intensity of proton and nuclei beams, the extension of opportunities for setting up new experiments at extracted beams of the accelerator and ensuring effective and accurate work of the accelerator complex of LHE in general.

Jointly with A. M. Baldin, Igor Nikolayevich was a co-leader of the theme “Modernization of the Synchrophasotron accelerator complex” implemented in broad cooperation of scientific organizations of the JINR Member States.

Among new bright areas of work carried out in the frames of modernization of the LHE accelerator complex of that time was the creation of sources of heavy ions and polarized nuclei. Created devices and developed techniques have been widely used at the new superconducting accelerator Nuclotron and are currently the basis for the planned operation modes of the injection complex of NICA in modes of collisions of heavy ions and polarized protons and deuterons. Igor Nikolayevich is the author and co-author of many scientific publications on important issues of the accelerator complex of the Laboratory.

For his achievements in scientific and organizational activities I. N. Semenyushkin was awarded governmental awards: two orders “Badge of Honor”, the medal “For Valiant Labour. In commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the birth of V. I. Lenin, a Large Silver Medal of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences “For Services to Science and Humanity”, the medal “Veteran of Labour”, the Anniversary Badge “50 years of the Nuclear Industry”. Igor Nikolaevich was awarded the title of “Veteran of Nuclear Energy and Industry” and “Honorary Employee of JINR”, he received a letter of thanks from JINR and JINR certificates of honour.

Igor Nikolaevich, a man of high civic position and responsibility, constantly conducted a lot of public work at the Institute and in the city.

The fond memory of Igor Nikolayevich Semenyushkin will always remain in our hearts.
