Training & internships

You’re not just studying—you’re learning how to do real science. At the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR), students and postgraduates work in an environment where education becomes genuine research. Starting as early as your second year, you can join international projects, work on unique facilities, and build a scientific career—not “someday,” but here and now.

1. International Student Practice (ISP)

The Institute invites undergraduate students who have completed their third year, master’s students, and first-year postgraduate students – representatives of the Member States and countries that concluded government-level agreements with JINR – to participate in the International Student Practice. This is an opportunity to:

  • get detailed information about the range of research conducted at JINR;
  • conduct a short study for educational purposes using the Institute’s main facilities under the supervision of qualified specialists;
  • meet the Institute’s employees and potentially choose a scientific supervisor in case of visiting JINR for a longer period to prepare a dissertation in the future;
  • hear lectures by leading JINR scientists on the new problems of modern physics;
  • get acquainted with the Russian culture.

2. Summer Student Programme

This programme is your launchpad for a scientific career at JINR. During summer break, undergraduate and postgraduate students from universities in JINR Member States join active research teams and contribute to real scientific projects.

Participation is competitive. Selected students gain not only hands-on experience but also opportunities for future collaboration—including admission to JINR’s PhD programme.

3. Online INTEREST Programme

Can’t come to Dubna? Start with a remote internship! The INTEREST (INTErnational REmote Student Training) programme is open to undergraduate (from year 2) and postgraduate students from any country in the world.

Through INTEREST, you will:

  • learn about JINR’s core research areas;
  • find a scientific supervisor for your thesis or PhD project;
  • begin working on a research project remotely;
  • increase your chances of being invited to an on-site internship or the Summer Student Programme.

Registration and details: interest.jinr.ru

4. Internships at the International Innovation Centre for Nanotechnology (IICNT)

For those interested in applied research and innovation, JINR offers internships at the International Innovation Centre for Nanotechnology (IICNT) of CIS countries. Participants:

  • engage with interdisciplinary scientific projects;
  • build connections with Russian and international researchers;
  • develop teamwork and scientific communication skills.

Why choose JINR?

  • International environment — over 5,000 scientists from 60 countries;
  • Real facilities — you work not on simulators, but on NICA, IBR-2, cyclotrons, and detectors;
  • Scientific mentorship — directly from discoverers and leading experts;
  • Career opportunities — programme alumni work at CERN, top universities, IT companies, and research centres worldwide.

Science doesn’t wait—it begins the moment you decide to join it.
Apply for a practice or internship and become part of the community shaping the future.
