Results of relativistic nuclear physics studies discussed in Mongolia

On 25–29 May 2026, Ulaanbaatar hosted the workshop titled “Results of VBLHEP JINR relativistic nuclear physics studies”. Organized by the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research and the Institute of Physics and Technology of the Mongolian Academy of Sciences (IPT MAS), the event was dedicated to the 70th anniversary of Mongolia as a JINR Member State.

Member of the Joint Institute’s Scientific Council, MAS Academician Tseepeldorj Baatar and IPT MAS Director, Academician Jav Davaasambuu gave speeches at the opening ceremony. President of the Mongolian Academy of Sciences, Academician Sodnomsambuu Demberel participated in the workshop as well.

The JINR delegation gave nine talks on the ongoing studies at the Laboratory of High Energy Physics and the Laboratory of Theoretical Physics. In particular, the following topics were covered:

  • experimental physics prospects at the NICA Accelerator Complex (Anton Baldin);
  • review of observed relativistic nuclear physics effects from the highest energies to NICA energies (Oleg Rogachevsky);
  • new projects using the NICA Complex extracted beams (Sergey Afanasyev);
  • dissociation of relativistic nuclei in emulsion experiments (Andrei Zaitsev);
  • theoretical description of low-multiplicity systems (Sergey Bondarenko).

The programme of applied research in the SPD Detector test zone proved particularly interesting for Mongolian scientists. Sergey Chetverikov and Vladimir Kukharev commented on the MARUSYA Facility and the SHINE Project – a station developed at the Rosatom Institute for Physical and Technical Problems, set to be commissioned at the NICA Complex by the end of 2026.

An important topic was the new approaches to processing and interpreting experimental data on relativistic nuclear interactions, discussed by Anton Baldin and Elina Baldina. Specialists from Dubna, Ulaanbaatar, and Tashkent are successfully processing the data obtained at JINR’s main facilities using bubble chambers.

The Mongolian scientists’ presentations, in turn, focused on the analysis of multiple particle production in relativistic collisions (Tseepeldorj Baatar), thermodynamic characteristics of particle production in pC and pp interactions (Maamuu Sovd), fragmentation of projectile nuclei in CC interactions (Janchiv Shinebayar), and supersymmetric corrections (Temurjav Lkhagvajav).

During the discussion of the presented results, MAS President, Academician Sodnomsambuu Demberel proposed expanding the ongoing cooperation between the scientific teams of Academician Tseepeldorj Baatar and Academician of the Russian Academy of Engineering, Head of the VBLHEP JINR Scientific and Experimental Department of Heavy Ion Physics Aleksandr Malakhov. The researchers will collaborate in order to conduct experiments at the NICA Accelerator Complex.
