Roads of Friendship: retro festival in Dubna

At the end of August, Dubna will host the JINR Roads of Friendship festival of retro automobiles and bicycles. The event dedicated to the 70th JINR anniversary will allow residents and guests of the city feel the atmosphere of the 1950s and 1980s.

Elegant Czechoslovak Tatra, iconic Trabant, colourful Wartburg from the GDR, and legendary Soviet classics, including ZIM and GAZ, will return to Dubna very soon. Back in the days, these cars were an integral part of the international science city.

The festival programme will include a demonstration of retro vehicles, thematic lectures, film screenings, a photo exhibition, and master classes for children and adults. The Joint Institute for Nuclear Research invites everyone to participate in this event and help recreate the authentic spirit of that era. To prepare the festival, the organizers are looking for:

  • Rare bicycles. If there are still Soviet bicycles of the brands “Shkolnik”, “Tourist”, “Ural”, “ZIF”, “Kama”, or “Sputnik” in your garage, shed, or on the balcony — let’s make an exhibition together! The organizers will be happy to accept your bike as a temporary exhibit;
  • Personal memories. We collect live stories about cars and bicycles. Tell us how you repaired a bike in the yard, or how your whole family pushed a stalled car. The visitors will be able to share memories and curious cases at the “open microphone” at the festival or even now, having previously arranged a meeting with the organizers;
  • Archive photos. Scroll through the family albums. Perhaps they are the ones that store flashbacks of busy Dubna streets, shots where you are just learning to ride a bike; family trips for mushrooms on the “Hunchback Zaporozhets” or bike rides of your parents to work. All images will be carefully scanned and returned to their owners in complete safety.

The exact dates of the festival will be announced later. If you have any questions, please contact the organizer of the festival, Director of the JINR Museum of the History of Science and TechnologyJINR Museum of the History of Science and Technology Anastasia Zlotnikova via a.zlotnikova@mail.ru.
