Seminar topic: “Muon Radiography: Present Status Review”

Speaker: Yu. A. Gornushkin

Abstract:

Muon radiography (muography) appeared in the 1960s and is based on the use of a cosmic muon flux for studying the density structure of large natural, archeological and industrial objects. Since the mid-2000s, more practical muographic studies with electronic and nuclear emulsion detectors started to be conducted worldwide. During the last years, a progress in the registration technique allowed enlarging the muography application range. The status of the studies and the results achieved will be reviewed, advantages and disadvantages of approaches being currently used will be compared, and prospects of muography application to volcano studying in Russia will be discussed.
