Dear colleagues and friends,

The main topic of the latest issue of the JINR Newsletter is the wide range of activities of the Institute in developing international cooperation. These include meetings in South Africa dedicated to the development of educational programmes, a youth school in Cuba, and joint scientific research as part of international collaborations.

We would also like to bring to your attention the JINR Director’s commentary on the first session of the JINR Scientific Council in the new seven-year period.

Meetings in South Africa

Meeting with SA educators: advancing collaboration in physics education

On 31 January, a meeting between representatives from the Western Cape Educational Department, JINR, and the University of the Western Cape took place at iThemba LABS. The main topic of discussion was the amplification of the educational opportunities available through the JINR Virtual Labs project for educational institutes of the Western Cape.

Joint RSA-JINR summer school programme for university students at iThemba LABS

From 15 January to 2 February, the Republic of South Africa hosted a three-week RSA-JINR Summer School. Ten delegates from the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research visited Cape Town to deliver presentations in different scientific fields.

On 29 January, alongside the RSA-JINR Summer School for South African university students, an educational event for schoolchildren and their teachers took place at iThemba LABS.

Conferences

International school for young scientists takes place in Cuba

From 25 to 28 February, the International School on Nuclear Methods and Applied Research in Environmental, Material and Life Sciences (NUMAR-2024) is taking place in Varadero, Cuba. As part of the programme, young Latin American scientists and their supervisors attend lectures by leading scientists from JINR and scientific organizations of Cuba and Mexico.

On 15–16 February, the 135th session of the JINR Scientific Council took place. Awards

Academician Deleg Sangaa receives title of Honoured Scientist of Mongolia

On 16 February, President of Mongolia Ukhnaagiin Khürelsükh presented the highest state awards to distinguished scientists and teachers of the country. Leading Researcher at the Institute of Physics and Technology of the Mongolian Academy of Sciences, former FLNP Deputy Director for Scientific Work, Academician Deleg Sangaa was among the awardees.

Research

23rd meeting of JUNO international collaboration

The event is taking place from 22 to 29 February in Kaiping (Guangdong Province, China). The JUNO Experiment aims to determine the neutrino mass hierarchy. Due to the large mass of the liquid scintillation detector and the high accuracy of the energy measurement, the experiment opens up a wide range of opportunities for research.

Registration for NCPM school opens

Students, postgraduates, and young scientists are welcome to participate in the School on Research in Strong and Superstrong Magnetic Fields of the National Centre for Physics and Mathematics (NCPM) that will take place from 21 to 24 May 2024 in Sarov. Registration for the event is open until 17 March via the link.

On 3 March, the Open Giant Slalom Championship will will take place at the Leonid Tyagachev ski resort. You can send your applications until 29 February inclusive to markova.av@phystech.edu and egorov.ivan@phystech.edu (cc to chudoba@jinr.ru). Subject: MIPT Open Championship 2024. Women’s Day with AYSS

The Association of Young Scientists and Specialists of JINR invites employees to take part in the festive evening dedicated to the International Women’s Day, which will take place in the Baryon Restaurant on 8 March, at 5:00 PM. You can register via the link until 29 February, 12:00 PM.

First laureates of OGANESSON Prize awarded

We offer you a video about the first award ceremony of the OGANESSON Prize, which took place on 16 February at the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts in Moscow. The Prize was established in 2023 by RAS Academician Yuri Oganessian and the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research to support scientists and science popularisers.

Filming at VBLHEP at JINR

VBLHEP Deputy Chief Engineer Konstantin Mukhin told the film crew about one of the stages of preparation for research at NICA, cooling of the MPD Facility magnet, as well as about the collider design and tasks of the project. The coverage will be aired as part of the Black holes. White Spots programme.

JINR team wins second place in cross-country skiing competitions

On 21 February, cross-country skiing competitions were held at the Yude-Kon Stadium as part of the 25th JINR Sports Games. The JINR team took the second place. Congratulations to the athletes on their successful performance!
