JINR Newsletter #7, 25 February 2026Dear colleagues and friends, On 20 February, at the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts in Moscow, a ceremony took place to award the laureates of the OGANESSON Prize. Four eminent researchers were honoured with the prize for their studies and endeavours that popularise science. Work continues to construct the deep underwater Baikal-GVD Neutrino Telescope – a facility that allows conducting research at the forefront of science. Plans for the 2026 expedition include laying two bottom cables and commissioning two complete standard clusters. The SC members reviewed NICA’s progress, heavy element synthesis plans, neutrino research, and international cooperation. Awards were presented, and preparations were announced for the Institute’s 70th anniversary. READ MORE ➟Flagship ProjectsWinter Baikal expedition startedCollaboration participants continue constructing the deep underwater Baikal Neutrino Telescope. The first group arrived at the shore station of the neutrino observatory to deploy new clusters of the detector. During the 2026 expedition, it is planned to lay two bottom cables and commission two complete standard clusters. The Prize was established in 2023 by RAS Academician Yuri Oganessian and the Joint Institute to support researchers and science popularisers. A working meeting took place at the JINR Scientists’ Club, where the parties discussed the areas of potential cooperation, particularly joint studies at the Institute’s future radiochemistry centre, with the MSC-230 Medical Cyclotron as its key facility. Track detectors based on thin-walled drift tubes (straws) can be used to determine the coordinates of particle flight in accelerator experiments and in some neutrino projects.
