The development of JINR as an international scientific organization is based on a continuous flow-in of talented young people from its Member States. Many scientists and engineers successfully doing science both in Dubna and abroad have been trained at JINR.

EDUCATION AT JINR

The important role of JINR as a source of scientific brainpower has been predetermined by its founding principles, as well as by scientific schools of eminent physicists, such as D.I.Blokhintsev, N.N.Bogolyubov, G.N.Flerov, I.M.Frank, H.Hulubei, L.Infeld, G.Nadzhakov, H.Niewodniczański , B.M.Pontecorvo, V.I.Veksler, etc.

JINR has always been a great place to start a successful career in science. Students and graduates from the JINR Member States have the opportunity to prepare their theses in the laboratories of the Institute, combining this work with studying at the basic departments of the leading universities of Russia or studying in accordance with individual education plans. Such format has a number of advantages, including the opportunity to participate in the frontline research conducted by the leading international collaborations; a wide range of specialties at the Institute; high competence of JINR specialists acting as students’ scientific supervisors; unique additional educational programmes. There are six dissertation councils functioning at JINR.

Every year various JINR-based educational programmes are attended by several hundreds of senior and junior students from numerous institutes and universities of JINR Member States. The overall coordination and support to the Educational Programme of JINR is performed by its special unit – the University Centre (UC).

Close links have been established between JINR and the leading technical universities of Russia, including the Moscow State University, National Research Nuclear University MEPhI, Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology, Kazan Federal University, and St. Petersburg State University. All these universities have JINR-based departments. At the initiative of the JINR Directorate and with the active support by the Moscow State University and the Moscow Region and Dubna Administration, in 1994 the State University of Dubna was established in the city. Students have the opportunity to start their academic careers in the laboratories of the Institute while still being undergraduates.

The University Centre of JINR coordinates an continuous training process for the JINR-based departments in order to train highly qualified specialists for JINR and its Member States. For this purpose, UC has attracted the leading researchers of the Institute to the educational activity, and assisted in the organization of scientific work of senior university students in the research teams of the Institute. Curricula of the university departments are complemented with special optional courses in accordance with the fields of scientific research at JINR.

For students and postgraduates from JINR Member States UC organizes and runs the International Summer Student Practice. Its participants are selected on a competitive basis by the country sending them for the Practice at JINR. JINR UC also runs the Student Programme “START”. Applications for participation in this Programme may be submitted by senior university students from any country of the world. The Programme participants are selected by the specialists of the Institute on a competitive basis.

In 2020, the JINR University Centre launched a new programme for students from all over the world. It is called INTEREST, an acronym of the English “INTErnational REmote Student Training”. The Programme allows students to get acquainted with the activities of the Institute and do research projects remotely.
