Freedom Day of Republic of South Africa

Organization, 27 April 2025

27 April marks the national Freedom Day of the Republic of South Africa (RSA). The ongoing fruitful JINR-RSA cooperation dates back to 1993. Since 2005, South Africa is an Associate Member of the Joint Institute.

Currently, the partnership between RSA and Joint Institute scientists is represented in 15 topics of the JINR Topical Plan. Researchers from South Africa take part in creating JINR’s large research infrastructure including the NICA Accelerator Complex, JINR Multifunctional Information and Computing Complex, DRIBS-III Project, and MSC-230 Medical Cyclotron, along with developing the IBR-2 Reactor and its instruments. Joint research is being conducted in theoretical and neutron physics, radiobiology, and material sciences. Students from South Africa participate in the Institute’s educational programmes.

On 9 December 2024, the 12th JINR Information Centre, the first in the Southern Hemisphere, opened at the national accelerator centre, NRF: iThemba LABS.

The Directorate of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research congratulates South African colleagues and partners on the Freedom Day of the Republic of South Africa and wishes them good health, well-being, inspiration, and new professional achievements for the benefit of science and progress!
