This work is based on the results of research and development carried out as part of a project to build a prototype of a Federated data storage system for experiments at the Large Hadron Collider and for other scientific fields requiring the storage of large volumes of data. The work presents the methodology and software infrastructure required for building Federated data storage systems. It demonstrates the implementation of this methodology in the form of both a prototype and a fully functional software and hardware solution.
