The State Prize of the Russian Federation of 2010 in the fields of science and technology goes to Mikhail Grigorievich Itkis and Yuri Tsolakovich Oganessian for the discovery of a new island of stability of superheavy elements. The Award Ceremony will be held on 12 June 2011, on the Russia Day, at the Grand Kremlin Palace.

“M.G.Itkis and Yu.Ts. Oganessian are the outstanding physicists experimentalists, who successfully head large-scale research and unique experiments on study of behavior of new superheavy elements, – as it was said at the web-site of the President of the Russian Federation – Their discoveries practically formed a new scientific filed – a chemistry of superheavy elements, and new synthesized elements enabled to give them finished appearance to the Mendeleev Periodic Table of Elements.

The significance of work of the scientists for modern science can’t be underestimated, – further emphasized the President. – Lifetimes of the 48 new nuclides which are provided at the JINR are equivalent now not to microseconds, but seconds, minutes and even twenty-four hours. This goal was achieved for the first time after many tries of leading nuclear-physics centers during almost a quarter of a century. Results of work of the laureates evoked a widest international response, and solidified leadership of Russia in discovering of new chemical elements at the board of the Mendeleev Periodic Table of Elements”.
