Education, 24 May 2018

On 21 May 2018, a group of high-school students from the school No. 5 of Torzhok visited the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research.

The acquaintance with the Institute began at the Museum of History of Science and Technology of JINR. A. Rastorguev gave a talk on the history of development of accelerators and their design. A. Zlotnikova and K. Kozubsky presented the “History”, “Future”, and “Experimentarium” exhibition halls and gave an overview of the Museum’s items as well as told the students the story of how they had gotten there.

The visit was continued in the Laboratory of Information Technologies, where LIT staff member M. Zuev spoke about the history of the JINR Computing Centre and guided a tour to the Multifunctional Information and Computing Complex. At the end of the excursion, M. Zuev gave the participants remarkable LIT souvenirs: bubble chamber films that had been obtained in 1967.

At the end of the visit, the guests went to the Dzhelepov Laboratory of Nuclear Problems. DLNP researcher A. Antoshkin told the school students about the principle of photodetectors operation, showed the Dark Room, i.e. laboratory for testing photomultipliers, and the NOvA experiment control room. He also shared several amusing stories about everyday life of scientists, which provoked a vivid interest of young researchers.
