Seminar topic: “Neutrino Geoscience”

Speaker: Oleg Smirnov

Abstract:

Neutrino geoscience, a study of the Earth’s interior by measuring the fluxes of neutrinos geologically produced at its surface, is a new interdisciplinary field of science, rapidly developing as a synergy between geology, geophysics and particle physics.
A review of neutrino geoscience will be presented at the seminar. The Earth’s structure and correlations between its chemical composition and the neutrino fluxes will be discussed. Physical models of the Earth connecting radiogenic heat in its interior with the neutrino fluxes at the surface will be introduced. The experimental results on the geoneutrino flux measurements by the Borexino and KamLAND experiments will be described. The potential of these experiments for geoneutrino studies will be reviewed, as well as new ideas and methods for geoneutrino detection.
